The Alfa dealer looked at it and said it was a faulty gear position sensor, and quoted $1900 to rebuild the Selespeed, or just to leave it and keep driving as its only a false signal and the car drives and changes gear

Another guy replaced his battery and idle problems were solved Ona JTS it could well be the 'pedal' sensor. There is no idle control stepper motor on later cars, they are fully drive by wire and the entire throttle movement is controlled by motor, not just the initial idle control movement. I personally believe the issue is with the plug at the pedal and the next one along the loom.
